92% of the Indian population suffers from low back pain. If you are over 35, do heavy manual work, are obese, have a sedentary lifestyle or smoke, your risk is higher — get evaluated by a spine specialist.
92% of the Indian population suffers from low back pain. People over 35, women, heavy manual workers, those who are obese, people with a sedentary lifestyle and smokers are at increased risk. If you fall into any of these categories and are experiencing low back pain, consult a spine specialist and get yourself evaluated.
Dr. Nishant Kumar is a Minimally Invasive Spine Surgeon practising in Mumbai. He specialises in back pain management without surgery, minimally invasive surgery, spinal cord injuries, spinal bone cancer, spinal tuberculosis, deformity correction and degenerative spine disease.
After completing his post-graduation he entered spine surgery in 2013, training for two years under Dr. Shekhar Bhojraj — one of the most respected pioneers of spine surgery in India — through the prestigious Spine Foundation Fellowship.
He was then selected for a year of surgical training in spine surgery at the National University Hospital, Singapore, under the internationally renowned spine deformity surgeon Professor Wong Hee Kit. He further sharpened his skills at Wales University, in Munich (Germany) and at Korea Medical University, Seoul, and aims to bring that global experience to Indian patients through evidence-based medicine.
Ultimately, if a patient does require surgery, he is well equipped with advanced techniques and offers a range of options with the pros and cons of each, based on experience and evidence. He is trained in minimally invasive and robotic spine surgery, with a keen interest in key-hole spine surgery, disc replacement and revision spine surgery.
He currently works in Mumbai as a consultant alongside Dr. Shekhar Bhojraj in the spine departments of Lilavati Hospital, Wockhardt Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital, Mukund Hospital and V. N. Desai Municipal Hospital.
Dr. Nishant Kumar travels from Mumbai twice a month for consultations at his clinics in Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Dhanbad. Patients can choose to be operated on at Ranchi or Mumbai by the same team, so the quality of care is never compromised.
A conservative-first philosophy
He believes in a holistic, step-by-step approach — exploring every non-operative option first. Around 70% of spine patients can be treated successfully with conservative therapy that does not involve surgery. Our team identifies the least invasive, most effective option to relieve your pain, restore function and prevent recurrence. Surgery is considered only when appropriate conservative treatment fails to deliver relief. A conservative approach can often make surgery unnecessary, or delay the need for it.
